The Rep Academy: Winter/Spring Classes at the *new* Studio! Ages Tot – Adults & Seniors

The Rep is proud to announce the opening of “The Rep Studios” at 2800 Lafayette Road in Portsmouth, NH, a 5000 sq/ft state-of-the-art performance art studio space! With three enormous and fully equipped dance studios, a vocal studio space, self-tape room, a large spacious lobby and changing areas, this space will serve as the rehearsal studios for our mainstage and auxiliary productions as well as the new home for all of our educational offerings!

For decades, The Portsmouth Academy of Performing Arts has served this community, offering training in acting, dance, music, and voice, through a myriad of camps, classes and more. With this new space, “The Rep Academy” plans to widen its offerings and unveil a full-time performing arts academy for ALL AGES with classes, camps, lessons and workshops taught by professional performing arts instructors from The Rep’s professional Rep Company, as well as special guests from Broadway and beyond!

Parents, grandparents, caregivers, and sworn protectors alike- join Miss Gwynnethe for a class of yoga play and exploration that is a perfect way to engage gross motor skills and introduce relaxation. This class is designed for non-crawlers and tots under two. The hope is for the adult and child to both gain something from this class. With parts of class geared specifically to the child and others more so for the adult. The yoga is a gentle introduction to physical movements ideal for building strength (postpartum friendly) and fostering a meaningful connection with your little one.

Stage Combat class will cover basic techniques needed to create a safe and effective fight for the stage. The Rep Academy Teen Co is a unique educational training program for young theater artists, Grades 8-12, who are interested in expanding their abilities in all things theater.
Students will receive intensive dance training in a range of styles and levels seen throughout classic and current musical theater productions, and engage in scene work and one-on-one monologue training. Group and solo vocal performance skills, writing, choreography and direction will be introduced while the ensemble develops an original work to be performed in our brand new black box performance space! Lead by our Dean of Education and Mainstage veteran Shaina Schwartz, along with Emily Zentis, Patrick Marr and a handful of incredibly talented guest instructors, this audition only program gives students the opportunity to grow and express their ideas and define their voices while learning the in’s and out’s of college and professional level theater, bringing together a broad range of talents and learning styles.

Tap is a popular style of American dance distinguished by percussive footwork that marks out precise rhythmic patterns on the floor. Dancers develop a keen sense of rhythm and balance. Monologues and Scene Study (Grades 8-12)

Monologues and Scene Study class offers practical tools for preparing both contemporary and classical audition monologues. Class work includes tools to relax you, helping you focus more on storytelling. The goal of this course is for each actor to leave with 2-5 audition ready monologues: contemporary comedic and dramatic, classical comedic and dramatic, and one “out of the box.” With the help of the instructor, students will select and bring in their own material to work on. The class culminates in an informal mock audition where students perform a chosen monologue for a panel of adjudicators and receive feedback. Build Your Book is here to help you with all of your audition questions! In this class you will work with the instructor to put together the perfect audition material for any performance opportunity. Contemporary dance is a movement genre which encourages the freedom of expression, improvisation and creative exploration of movement. In class, we will use across the floor progressions and improvisation games to inspire the student’s own creative movement as well as learn choreography and partnering exercises. Contemporary is offered to students who have previous dance training in ballet or jazz, or at the discretion of the instructor. Students will dance in bare feet.

Leaps and Turns is offered as an additional training opportunity for dancers enrolled in jazz, ballet, hip hop or musical theater technique classes. Designed for adult beginners (16 and older) who want to try aerial acrobatics.
