Strawbery Banke welcomes families to step into the past in-person and virtually for learning and discovery in the historic neighborhood of Puddle Dock. Explore traditional arts and crafts such as basket weaving and woodworking, learn how to write a historical fiction book, solve mysteries using documents, images, and objects, and so much more!

Playing in the Past Homeschool Class
Tuesdays, September 26 – October 17, 2023
Morning session: 9:30-11:30 AM

Explore life in early America through crafts, games, and dress-up! Each day students learn about different aspects of 18th-century life through hands-on projects and activities and spend time roleplaying in costume in one of Strawbery Banke’s historic houses. This is a family program designed for ages 7-11. Older and younger siblings can participate, but at least one child should be in the recommended age range.

A History of Thanksgiving Homeschool Day

Morning session: 9:45 AM – 12 PM
Afternoon session: 12:45-3 PM
Trace the evolution of Thanksgiving in this active, fast-paced, and multi-sensory program. Discover how Thanksgiving transcended time, place, and culture to become the uniquely American holiday celebrated today. Try old-fashioned cooking, talk with costumed roleplayers, and make a toy to take home. In small groups guided by a museum educator, participants find the common themes of this holiday over four centuries: charity, gratitude, and the celebration of family and community. Upon arrival, families and students are divided into smaller groups of roughly 12 people. A History of Thanksgiving is a family program designed for children ages 5-12. Those ages 5 to 8 years old must be accompanied by an adult. 9-12-year-olds can participate without an accompanying adult.

Family History Mystery Homeschool Program (Virtual)
Tuesdays, January 9, 16, 23 & 30, 2024, 10-11 AM
Using documents, images, and objects, students delve into the world of genealogy through an investigation of the lives of different families that lived in the Strawbery Banke neighborhood. Identify good sources, practice using primary documents to uncover clues, and develop skills to explore your own family history. This homeschool program is designed for ages 8+.

Historical Fiction Writing Class Homeschool Program (Virtual)
Tuesdays, February 6, 13, 20 & 27, 2024, 10-11 AM
Learn the art of creative writing through the lens of history. Working with a professional author, homeschoolers hone their writing skills, use real historical primary and secondary sources, and develop imaginations. At the end of the month, students will have a completed piece of writing or the first chapter of a book they can continue writing at home. This homeschool program is designed for ages 8+.

Journey into Colonial Life Homeschool Day
Friday, March 8, 2024, 9:45 AM-12 PM
Experience daily life in the 18th century as you participate in kitchen chores in front of an open hearth, make old-fashioned toothpowder, dress up in historical costumes, simulate a stagecoach ride, and play an 18th-century school game. Participants visit two historic homes as they compare and contrast daily life 200 years ago to today. Topics include health & hygiene, school, entertainment, and daily chores. Upon arrival, families are divided into smaller groups of roughly 12 people. Journey into Colonial Life is a family program designed for children ages 5+.

Archaeology Adventure Homeschool Day
Friday, May 3, 2024, 10 AM-4 PM
Delve into the world of archaeology and discover the secrets that lie beneath your feet. Explore authentic archaeological sites, participate in an archaeology-themed scavenger hunt, visit furnished homes, meet roleplayers, and much more! Students 8-12 can sign up for additional hands-on workshops learning about what it takes to be an archaeologist and techniques for excavation. Archaeology Adventure Day is a family program designed for all ages.

Changes and Challenges: 1900-1950 Homeschool Program

Explore history through hands-on activities focused on the early years of the 20th century. The historic buildings and gardens become homeschoolers’ classrooms as they investigate new inventions in transportation and entertainment; bake Depression-Era “make-do recipes”; and explore life on the Homefront during World War II. Changes and Challenges: 1900-1950 is a family program designed for ages 7-11. Older and younger siblings can participate, but at least one child should be in the recommended age range.
