Portsmouth Academy of Performing Arts (PAPA) – Winter/Spring 2022 Classes

The Portsmouth Academy of Performing Arts offers classes in musical theater, dance, acting and voice. Classes are open to students from ages 6 and up and taught by regional theatre professionals, including Seacoast Rep’s own Resident Artists & Company members. Our elite theatre education in the form of classes, camps, workshops, and Teen & Youth Productions.

Our mission is to create a supportive, all-inclusive environment, where students with diverse talents, interests and backgrounds can collaborate to create and perform theater. To instill in them the skills they will need to develop into the best performers they can be. To challenge, engage and inspire students to celebrate the power of the performing arts by finding the beauty in our own uniqueness and the strength in our differences to build a more conscious and compassionate society.

PAPA’s Winter / Spring Classes Schedule
(January 10, 2022 – May 21, 2022)

ACTING

Intro. to Acting (Ages 6-7)
This class will introduce the fundamentals of acting. The students will learn theater terminology, improvisation activities and will incorporate scene work to grow confidence in their abilities. Taught by Maryann Williams.

Musical Theater Acting (Ages 8-9)
In Musical theatre acting students will grow in their knowledge of musicals from the Golden Age to Contemporary, incorporating scene work, along with exploring character motivation through music and lyrics. Taught by Maryann Williams.

Acting 1 (Ages 10-13)
This is an ongoing class to help sharpen students’ acting skills. Each class will consist of acting activities & improv games to guide each student in learning to react vs. act, and how to use your voice and body when acting. Taught by Jennifer Rockwell.

Acting 2 (Ages 13+)
This class will focus on strengthening your craft. From improv and comedy, to monologues and audition prep, to scene work and acting within a song. We are excited to give our students the opportunity to round out and fine-tune their talents.  Taught by Jennifer Rockwell.

DANCE

Ballet (Ages 12+)
This class will consist of a warmup, bar, floor combinations, and diagonal work across the floor that will focus on the fundamentals of Ballet with a strong emphasis on technique. Taught by Isabella Baer (Bean).

Hip Hop (Ages 13+)
Hip Hop is a high-energy, fun dance style that mixes sharp and soft movements. Learn how to listen to the music behind the lyrics and hit every part of your body on the beat. Taught by Isabella Baer (Bean).

Jazz – Advanced (Ages 13+)
Jazz uses many of the techniques from other forms of dance and allows students to bring out their individual dance style and originality. Classes consist of a warm-up, isolation exercises, diagonal work across the floor, and combinations. Prior Jazz experience recommended. Taught by Andy Kowalczewski.

Lyrical – Advanced (Ages 13+)
Lyrical is a dance style that blends ballet and jazz dance. A lyrical dancer uses movement to express strong emotions such as love, joy and anger. Classes consist of warm-up, isolation exercises, diagonal work across the floor, and combinations. Prior jazz experience required. Taught by Isabella Baer (Bean).

Conditioning for Musical Theater (Ages 12+)
Learn how to train your body to sing and dance simultaneously without losing your breath. This class will include cardio conditioning, vocal training and breathwork as well as super fun, high-energy choreography to get your mind, lungs, and body ready for the Mainstage. Taught by Shaina Schwartz.

Musical Theater Dance JR (Ages 10+)
Musical Theater Dance is the study of Broadway dance and dance styles, relying heavily on knowledge from Ballet and Jazz. This class will include center warm up stretches, isolations, and core strengthening, followed by across the floor technique and choreography. Students will also learn numbers from Broadway shows. Taught by Chloe Eck.

JR Rep Company (Ages 10-13)
JR Rep Company will meet each week and explore all aspects of Musical Theatre. Students will learn to act through song and dance, play theater games, do Improv, build characters, and work together as a team. Taught by Chloe Eck & Nick Robbins.

Teen Rep Company (Ages 13-18 Audition Only!)
Teen Rep Company members receive extensive musical theatre training through acting, singing, dance classes and workshops, as well as audition training and performance experience. In addition, teens get to connect and perform with other theatre kids across the Seacoast. Teen Rep Company members are required to take one dance class per week and 2 ballet classes per month. Varsity Coaches: Christina DeMaio, Isabella Baer, Jennifer Rockwell, Kristen Dalton & Suzanne Jones.

VOICE

Beginner Voice Class (Ages 9-12)
In this small group class, your beginning singer will learn accessible tools of vocal technique to help them explore and expand their range and establish healthy habits that will serve them as they grow. We will learn foundational music literacy skills (such as rhythm and solfege) to help them learn the songs they love most! Group and solo singing will take place. Taught by Christina DeMaio.
Saturdays: 1:15 – 2:15pm
