NHSPCA’s Reading with the Animals, Storytimes + Pen Pal Animal programs!

Everyone knows that the New Hampshire SPCA is a loving community for pets awaiting adoption, but did you realize how much fun you can have there?

If you are an animal lover, the SPCA offers all kinds of opportunities to interact with the animals.

The NHSPCA Humane Education team has always worked hard to provide interesting, educational, and fun opportunities for youth to interact with animals and learn about respect, compassion, and kindness for all living things. Check out their educational programming while continuing to practice responsible Covid-19 restrictions!

Story Times with Animals
Welcoming families with children ages 2-5 to visit the Humane Education classroom for story time with classroom animals! Reservations are required and space is limited. We’re excited to be able to welcome guests for in-person story time in our Humane Education classroom and will now be offering story time TWICE per week. Morning story time on Tuesdays (10:30-11:30 am) and an afternoon story time on Thursdays (1:00-2:00 pm). During story time, children will listen to a story about an animal, color a picture of an animal, and visit the animals in the classroom.

Currently, story time will require pre-registration and masks will be required for all attendees to comply with COVID-19 safety requirements. Each session will offer a total of 12 spaces, with a maximum of three “tickets” per family (one adult may bring up to three children). Reading with the Animals
Reading with the animals is back and is available for children in grades 1-8! Whether your child loves to read, or they could use a boost of reading confidence, they are invited to join us at the NHSPCA to read to an animal.

Children in grades 1-8 who are reading at any level are invited to join us at the NHSPCA to read to a small animal from the Humane Education classroom. There are many opportunities to read to cats, other small adoptable animals, and/or friendly dogs will also be available. This program helps children improve their reading skills in a comfortable and relaxed environment while also helping the animals by providing socialization and human interaction. Reading sessions last 30 minutes and take place the first and third Wednesdays of each month between 4 pm and 6 pm.

Animal Pen Pals
Or should we say PetPals!? Do you need some practice writing friendly letters? Are you missing all the news at the NHSPCA? More likely, are you missing all the animals? Our Animal Pen Pals program is a great opportunity to practice composing friendly letters and sharing ideas in writing. It is available to children (and adults!) of all ages and includes regular correspondence for up to a month, reaching out as frequently as you respond! After you register for the program, you’ll receive a letter from an animal ready to learn all about you!
