Looking for a day trip activity? Explore the Newport Mansions & Grounds with the Family!   Beaches, cliff walks, beautiful mansions, delicious ice cream and more await your trip. We love to visit the mansions for a tour when we go to Newport.

The Breakers Family Tour

This tour allows parents and children to explore the historic Vanderbilt summer “cottage,” imagining themselves personally witnessing the history made in this great Gilded Age chateau.

As the house shares its secrets during this audio tour, you hear from family members and staff, as well as fanciful creatures like the friendly dolphin hiding under the grand staircase, the lions of the Music Room and the dragons in the Dining Room. You experience a summer day in the life of one of the Vanderbilt children, learn about the masters of the kitchen – Monsieur Le Chef and his colleague, The Butler. You take an imaginary slide down the grand stairs on a silver serving tray, listen as imaginary acrobats pile 50 feet high to measure the Great Hall, and learn all the “rules” the children had to live by at The Breakers.

This 45-minute experience can be enjoyed by youngsters while parents take “The Breakers Revealed” audio tour, which follows the same route and timing. Visitors can stop as often as they like while traveling through the house, and can explore more information at subject stops along the route.
No timed tickets are required at this time, but you can purchase tickets in advance.

Another great way for families to enjoy the mansions is to purchase a “gardens and grounds” ticket. This unique specialty ticket includes outdoor-only access to any THREE of the following properties – exterior grounds only: Green Animals Topiary Garden, The Breakers, Marble House OR The Elms. Does NOT include interior entry. The three properties can be visited on different days.

Stroll among a menagerie of topiary animals at Green Animals. Stop for a picnic alongside the Chinese Tea House at Marble House near the Cliff Walk. At The Breakers, enjoy a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean and meander along the recently restored Serpentine Path. Share your sandwich with any of the Greek gods and goddesses at The Elms. Families are welcome to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy during their visit.
