Dipping Day: Wetland Exploration for Families

May 17, 2025 @ 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Early spring wetlands are busy nurseries for a multitude of plant and animal life. In this outdoor exploration program, children and their parents will dip into the streams, puddles, and mucky wetlands with clear plastic containers and examine what they find with magnifying glasses and field guides at an “Identification Station”. Perhaps the remnants of frog egg masses will be discovered. Dippers may scoop up frog or salamander larvae. Wetlands abound with invertebrates and dippers may discover anything from odd little isopods, dragonfly nymphs or dainty little midge larvae. Once identified, the critters are gently released, and the children can head back for another round of dipping. Children learn about the different aquatic life around them, fun facts about the wetland environments, and most importantly, experience the sheer delight that springs from being outside in nature.

We will clear a path for participants to explore the wetlands, but be forewarned – it may still be a bit muddy. Parents are encouraged to dress all participants appropriately. Bathrooms with faucets are available for hand washing, but mud boots, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and towels are encouraged.
