Sweet Tradition Returns: Portsmouth Historical Society’s 35th Annual Gingerbread House Contest & Exhibition! On display now through December 30th.
A Community Tradition!
The holiday season in Portsmouth kicked off with one of the Seacoast’s most cherished events: the 35th Annual Gingerbread House Contest & Exhibition hosted by the Portsmouth Historical Society. From November 28 through December 30, 2025, visitors of all ages are invited to stroll through a gallery filled with imaginative and deliciously crafted gingerbread creations — all on display at 10 Middle Street in downtown Portsmouth.
This year’s theme, “The Great Gingerbread Experiment,” encourages participants to push the boundaries of traditional gingerbread structures. Builders are invited to get creative with unconventional designs, innovative materials, and playful concepts that defy cookie-cutter expectations. From elaborate seasonal scenes to whimsical gingerbread sculptures that break the mold, the exhibition promises a feast for the eyes and the imagination.
Gingerbread House Workshops – December 13 & 20: Learn tips and tricks from experienced decorators in hands-on sessions where all ages can build and embellish their own edible masterpieces.
Gingerbread Smash – January 3 at 1 pm: Wrap up the season with a lighthearted event where leftover gingerbread creations are joyfully disassembled, celebrating creativity and community.
Open daily from 10 am–5 pm (with evening hours on select dates), the Gingerbread House Contest and Exhibition is free and open to the public — a festive destination for families, history lovers, and holiday enthusiasts alike. From towering gingerbread castles to playful and experimental edible art, the showcase highlights the creativity of local bakers, architects, families, and young artists.
More than just a display of culinary artistry, the event brings the community together in celebration of tradition, imagination, and holiday cheer. Whether you’re casting your vote for a People’s Choice Award or simply admiring the artistry, the Portsmouth Historical Society’s gingerbread exhibition offers a unique and heartwarming way to experience the season.
