Afternoon “Discovery Sails” on the ‘Piscataqua’ with the Gundalow Company!

Looking for a fun afternoon on the water? The Gundalow Company offers Discovery Sails daily* from 3:00-5:00pm through the summer. Each sail has an educational theme and offers visitors a hands-on sailing experience. A great way to learn about the cultural and natural history of the region from the best vantage point the city has to offer!

You are welcome to bring a picnic and beverages of your choice on this sail!

These sails offer unique topics of focus on different days, including:

  • Marine Life and Water Quality: The Piscataqua river is teeming with life.  Sample the water or help with a plankton tow, and get up close with a variety of marine life such as zoo plankton, mussels, oysters, and lobsters.
  • Arts of the Sailor: Many different skills are required to build and sail a gundalow.  Join the crew and learn about traditional boat construction, caulking, sail work, rope work, and knot tying.
  • Navigation: There’s more to navigation than knowing which red barn you have passed!  Explore depth sounding, compasses, log lines, and charts —and help to steer a straight course!
  • Watershed: We all live in a watershed, intimately connected to water.  Experiment with a three- dimensional model of our watershed to discover the effects of human influences over time.

Check the sail schedule under the Purchase Tickets button to see the topic of the day.

    1. I would say as young as 5 or 6 through adults. There’s a lot of information and education passed on, so the sweet spot is really about 8-13, but the younger ones will enjoy the ride and other hands-on activities.
