So you are vacationing on Cape Cod. You have a cottage, house, or even worse, a hotel room full of kids, and it is NOT a beach day! You hadn’t planned for that. What now? What do you do when everyone is climbing the walls and you are going crazy?
Fret not. While the Cape is certainly known for its beautiful beaches, when the weather turns cloudy or rainy there are still many other fun options. Of course, there are the cinemas, game rooms, and shopping centers, but there are also many other unique attractions to keep you and the kids busy and happy on an inclement day in paradise.
Here are but a few ideas of where to take the kids on the Cape when the beach is not an option:
- The Cape Cod Children’s Museum in Mashpee is always a family favorite. Cape Cod Life magazine considers it to be one of the best rainy day activities on the Cape.
- Kids and potato chips – While potato chips are not part of the basic four food groups, no one can dispute that kids and potato chips go together. Take a tour of the Cape Cod Potato Chip Factory in Hyannis and see how they make the chips that taste so good, not just to kids but adults too!
- You’re on the ocean, so why not take in a nautical attraction? The Cape Cod Maritime Museum in Hyannis may be just the ticket.
- For the budding naturalist there is the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, Massachusetts.
- It is amazing how long people, even kids, will watch glass blowing. Take the gang to the Sandwich Glass Museum and see for yourself how this historic craft will fascinate the whole crew.
- If you have members of the family who like classic sports cars then beat a path to the Toad Hall Classic Sports Car Collection in Hyannis Port.
- Are you and the kids aquarium fans? You may want to check out ZooQuarium in West Yarmouth. Guaranteed fun!
- If you just can’t get enough of aquariums, be sure to put the Woods Hole Science Aquarium on your rainy day activity list. This popular aquarium is also a rainy day favorite of Cape Cod Life magazine.
- Want to try and slide a little history past the kids? How about checking out the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum. To perhaps make it a little more palatable, the Museum is also home to the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame.
- And let us not forget children’s theater. The Cape Playhouse in Dennis presents Theater for Children throughout the summer. The Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater also presents WHAT 4 Kids in July and August.
Rain or shine, there are so many wonderful things to do on Cape Cod that you do not have to resort to the commonplace things you do at home to keep everyone amused when Mother Nature is being uncooperative.
