Penny Pinchin’ Mama Gets Creative with Saving

Posted by SeacoastKidsCalendar in Articles, Budgeting, Health & Home

My goal for 2010, like so many other families, is to spend less and save more.  I’ve read a zillion articles to make me richer quicker, pay off my debt faster and have my kids’ college paid off by the time they turn three. Throughout all the research, I’ve come across some great tricks of the trade during these penny-pinching days:

1.  Think electronics. Combine your cable, internet and telephone service into one bill. It costs less and offers the convenience of one single bill a month. Also, try reducing the speed of your internet service and STEP AWAY FROM THE LAPTOP! This may drive you crazy but you may end up spending less time on the internet and more time with your family — so it’s a win-win for you and your kids.

2.  Contact your credit card company and ask for a lower rate. It doesn’t always work but sometimes it does! Simply call and ask. Try to remain calm and be nice because, believe it or not, it does make a difference. The customer service representatives are more willing to help you if you’re not that crazed, stressed out person on the other end (not that I would ever be THAT person).

3. Go local and get books, music and movies from your library. This is no secret…I’ve noticed lately that our library’s parking lot is packed! It’s a great place to bring your little darlings on a winter’s day. They often run Saturday matinees, offer crafts and other activities to keep the kids occupied.  Plus, it’s hard to beat free entertainment!

4.  Be resourceful. Check out that Redbox at your local grocery and big box store where $1 movie rentals have even the chic waiting in line on a Friday night. They offer new releases and independent titles that even the most cultured movie buff would love.

5. Lock yourself inside and stay home! It costs the average family of four over $50 to go to the movies and then you still have to buy dinner. Homemade pizza or takeout and a classic game is a great way to connect with your family.

6.   Swap date nights. Instead of paying a babysitter, trade off with friends! The first weekend of the month they watch your rug rats and the second weekend of the month you watch their little monsters.  That way, you can spend less on the babysitter but still have your time away. And your kids will have fun, too.

7.  The alternative vacation. I’ll admit the idea of this is intriguing and a bit scary at the same time.  If you have a relative or close friend who lives in another state, arrange a house swap for a week.  This is a great opportunity to explore a different area and have your own personal concierge that can recommend the best restaurants and entertainment.

8.  Skip the convenience.  You’ve heard it before but make the commitment.  Buy a head of lettuce instead of the prepackaged stuff. Pack lunches instead of buying junk on the run. The savings truly add up.  These days I forgo my favorite coffee chain and save myself $12 a week.

Good luck on your quest to live smarter and save more.  I’ll see you in line at the Redbox!
