10 Great Children’s Story Times on the Seacoast: More than just reading!

Story times are every caregiver’s tried and true activity, but when you have story times that are fun as these we’ve found around the seacoast, you’ve gone and hit the big time.

1. NHSPCA Story Time with the Animals

A donation of $5.00 is suggested and appreciated.

Every Thursday morning at 10:30am, the Learning Center welcomes children 2-5 years old to listen to a story about an animal, color pictures and visit with real animals in the classroom (hamsters, bunnies, birds, chinchillas and sometimes kittens). After story time, you can take a walk around and visit with the kitties that roam and lounge in their shared “bedrooms” or get some tails waggin’ by walking through the dog kennels and saying hello to the canine counterparts. A bag of kitty litter or dog food is always a welcome donation! The perfect story time experience for animal lovers!

2. Barnes & Noble Story Time

No registration is required. All events are free and open to the public.

Story times are held in the children’s section of the book store and occur twice a week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 11:00am. Each week has a different theme where kids enjoy two stories followed by a fun craft. The vibe is always laid back and there are plenty of kids and book to interact with!

3. Churchill’s Gardens Toddler Story Time
12 Hampton Road, Exeter NH (603) 772-2685
No registration is required. All events are free and open to the public.

Held select Tuesdays at 11:00am , join Oliver for free story time in the cozy and warm greenhouse. New stories and themes are chosen for each story time and coloring pages are given to all kids attending. Churchill’s is a nursery and garden center that’s a fantastic place to shop with the kids. In addition to one of the largest selections of plants, trees and flowers, Churchill’s also has a seasonal playground, koi pond (ask them for food!) and a small fenced area that is home to chickens, donkeys and goats.

4. Currier Museum of Art’s Story Time in the Gallery

No registration is required. Free with Museum general admission* (kids 12 and under are always free)

Held the fourth Monday of the month at 11:30am, children can hear an art-related story read by a children’s librarian followed by a creation of their own work of art! Recommended for ages 2 to 5, but all are welcome. After story time, the rest of the museum has plenty of fun to offer including an extremely well-thought out museum guide for kids that includes an “Eye Spy” game and a breathtakingly beautiful indoor café where you can grab a snack or lunch. *Note: call your local library and borrow a museum pass and your admission will be totally free!

5. Down on the Farm: Stories & Exploration

Join Pilar for fun stories, crafts, and farm exploration every Monday from 10:00am-11:00am at Coppal House Farm in Lee. Great for ages 2-5 with an adult, but all ages are welcome. Enjoy a story, sing some songs, meet some animals, explore the farm…so much to do! Dress for the weather as we will always spend some time outside for this program.

6. Noggin Factory Story Time with Ms. Becky

No registration is required. Story time is free and open to the public.

Held every Friday at 10:30am, Noggin Factory’s free story time with Ms. Becky is carefully designed with 3-5 year-olds in mind. Each Story Time includes stories, crafts and fun activities like finger-plays. Ms. Becky, a retired second grade teacher, simply adores children and is passionate about creating engaging, thoughtful experiences that will leave them begging to return the next week!

7. Story Time with Meredith & Stu

Free for members. Regular admission applies to non-members. No registration necessary.

Every first Sunday of the month at 2:00pm, Meredith & Stu team up for a blow-out story time for all ages! Meredith reads several stories on a theme, sometimes incorporating puppets or felt boards, and Stu sings a few songs and sometimes joins in reading the stories. After the story time, stay and play at the museum which offers tons of educational exhibits, play areas and fun for everyone!

8. Ocean Commotion
Seacoast Science Center, 570 Ocean Blvd. Rye, NH (603) 436-8043
Cost: $5 for member children; $8 non-member children; no cost for adults. No registration necessary.

Ocean Commotion is an active, indoor program that meets Monday mornings from 9:30am-10:30am and teaches about nature through movement, music, stories and games. Check their calendar for weekly activities. Admission applies for non-members who would like to stay and enjoy the Center after the program.

9. Wee Ones Wednesdays
Children’s Museum of NH, 6 Washington Street, Dover NH (603) 742-2002
The cost per adult/child pair is $7 for museum members and $10 for non-members. Additional children in a family are $5 each for members and $8 each for non-members.

Wee Ones Wednesdays is an interactive weekly drop-in program for children ages 2-4. Children and a parent or caregiver enjoy art, music, movement and conceptual learning with a new theme each week. Sessions are offered from 9:45-10:30 am and 10:45-11:30 am.
